The Hydrogeology Department is developing research on the following areas: a) water resources, prospecting and monitoring; b) hydromineral and geothermal potential resources evaluation; c) hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical modelling; d) water age dating and definition of flow paths through isotopic and environmental tracers; e) applied geophysics to groundwater studies; f) development of 3D aquifer visualization systems; g) groundwater microbiota; h) contamination and definition of strategies for protection and remediation; i) risk assessement. On these bases, the DH is making available a five year research position for a scientist committed to deal with applied and fundamental research on Hydrogeology under the following topics: (1) water resources and aquifer modeling, including saturated and unsaturated flow and mass transport; (2) age dating and definition of flow paths through isotopic and environmental tracers; (3) development of 3D aquifer visualization systems; (4) groundwater contamination and risk assessement. This researcher should have a good knowledge in the selected scientific fields and have the ability to develop new lines of these research areas. A proven record of the capacity to publish scientific papers in high quality international journals is required. Candidates should be fluent in English, and a good knowledge of Portuguese would be desirable. The successful candidate will be physically located in the Hydrogeology Department of Alfragide Geosciences Data Center. He/she will become involved in ongoing projects in the DH and in training of young researchers, but will also be expected to design new projects and pursue funds for research. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences, Engineering Geology or related field, and should submit their curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation, up to five selected reprints, and names and addresses of three individuals who can be contacted for letters of reference to augusto.costa@ineti.pt with copy to judite.fernandes@ineti.pt. Application deadline: 30 September 2008 5-year position, base salary: 43k€ (annual) Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral research experience. In exceptional cases, duly justified, FCT may consider accepting applicants with less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience. The jury reserves the right not to fulfil the posts in the absence of qualified applications. The successful candidate will celebrate a 5-year contract for a Research position with INETI-Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovação, I.P., or with the entities that will succeed in their attributions and competencies in the scope of the extinction process of this Institution. Other good candidates can also be proposed for contract. Please note: The funding for this call and the final appointment of these positions are dependent on the approval from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia of the pre-selected candidates proposed by the INETI.
